Albany is located in the southern portion of the US state of New York, which is located in the northeastern portion of the continental United States. New York was one of the original thirteen colonies that declared their independence from Britain, and it has been one of the most important cultural centers in the history of the United States. It is home to Albany, the largest US city by population, as well as some of the largest eastern seaboard ports. The state of New York attracts more tourists than any other New England state. Albany is located in Albany County and is the seat of government in the county. English is the most widely spoken and written language in Albany.

The city of Albany is a very old city with a rich history. Because of that there are several historical sites and museums to see there. The New York State Museum is open to the public and houses displays and exhibits that document the history of the city and state. The USS Slater is a decommissioned World War 2 destroyer that now serves as a museum ship on the Hudson River. The Albany Heritage Area is home to a museum, gift shop, and planetarium.

Albany has a humid continental climate, which means mild summer temperatures and very cold winter temperatures. Because of its northern location, Albany summer temperatures rarely exceed 85 degrees Fahrenheit, while winter temperatures can dip well below freezing for days on end. Blizzard conditions can occur from time to time in the winter months, and rain falls most often during the months of July and August.
