Traveler Advice on Anchorage ?
A Traveler's Guide to Anchorage
Anchorage has the distinction of being the northernmost major city in the United States. It is also the largest city in Alaska, the northernmost state in the United States. In fact, almost half of all residents of Alaska live in Anchorage. The region around Anchorage has been settled for some time, mainly by Russian whalers and fishermen. In 1912 Alaska became a US territory and Anchorage became an important stop on the Alaska Railroad and grew from there. Soon the US military began establishing bases nearby and people started moving to Alaska for the tax friendly atmosphere and low cost of housing. In the mid 20th century oil was discovered nearby and the city became an oil boomtown. Since then the city has grown steadily and has incorporated a business aspect to its economy. Because of its location in the extreme north, Anchorage has a subarctic climate. The summer months are the warmest, with temperatures usually getting into the 60's or 70's Fahrenheit. The winter months are brutally cold. The average January temperature is 9 degrees Fahrenheit and the city of Anchorage receives an average of 70 inches of snowfall per year. Also, because of the city's latitude the summer days are very long, sometimes as long as 19 or 20 hours of sunlight per day. The winter days are very short, with sometimes as little as 6-8 hours of sunlight per day. The main attraction to Anchorage for visitors is the wildlife and the natural surroundings. The wildlife around the city is very diverse and very different from anything like it anywhere else in the country. Animals that are frequently seen in the city include black bears, grizzly bears, moose, mountain goats, dall sheep, and wolves. Beavers are also numerous just outside the city as are foxes. Whales are frequently seen in the waters off the coast of Anchorage and whale watching is a very popular activity for visitors to the city. For a price you can board a boat and travel out into the whale lanes and hope to see a few up close and in person. Please contact one of our customer service agents to book your flight to Anchorage.
