Barcelona Quick Facts
A Traveler's Guide to Barcelona
Barcelona is the capital city of Spain, as well as the second largest city in the country. It is located on the northeast coast of Spain right on the Mediterranean Sea. Barcelona has always been an important financial city, but recently the city has experienced extensive growth in population, wealth, and importance.
As with most other Mediterranean cities, Barcelona has a very mild climate year round. Summers are long in Barcelona, with temperatures usually peaking out around 85 degree Fahrenheit. Winters are very pleasant in Barcelona because temperatures usually stay within the 45-55 degree Fahrenheit range.
Barcelona was an important range city of the Roman Empire, but it wasn't until the marriage of Ferdinand and Isabella in 1469 that the country of Spain united and Barcelona became a true Spanish city. Because of this rich history, there are many buildings in the city that reflect centuries of architecture, all the way back to the Roman times. One of the main sites in the city is the Barri Gotic, or "The Gothic Quarter", which is the center of the old town of Barcelona. Some of the city's most historic buildings are there.
Some of the most famous buildings in the city are as follows: the Cathedral of St. Eulalia, the Church of Santa Maria del Mar, the church of Sant Pau del Camp, the Arc de Triomf, and the Columbus Monument. The National Museum of Art in Catalonia houses some of Barcelona's most treasured works of art. The Maritime Museum displays Spain's unique maritime heritage, and the Cosmocaixa is an internationally renowned science museum.
Barcelona was named the "Best Beach City" in the world by National Geographic. Indeed, many of Barcelona's tourists come to the city to experience the beautiful beaches.
FC Barcelona is the local football club that competes in the European Champions League. It is one of the most successful football clubs in all of Europe.
Barcelona Airport services Barcelona and the surrounding areas. The airport is located approximately 11 miles from the downtown area. The Port of Barcelona is a frequent stop for cruise ships and pleasure vessels.
