 A Traveler's Guide to Birmingham

Birmingham is a city that is located in the central region of the United Kingdom in the country of England. It is the second largest British city besides London and has a population of just over a million residents. During the Middle Ages Birmingham was primarily a marketplace town. Its central location made it very convenient for merchants and customers to travel to. Later it became the heart of the British Industrial Revolution. It was nicknamed "The First Manufacturing Town in the World" because of its role in industry and manufacturing. Today the city is still an important center for business and trade. It is home to two of the country’s largest universities and is widely regarded as England's center for higher education outside of London.

There are many venues for the performing arts in Birmingham. These include the Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, the Birmingham Royal Ballet, and the Barber Institute of Fine Arts.

Birmingham has a humid continental climate, which means warm summers and cool winters. Summer temperatures generally stay in the 80's Fahrenheit and winter temperatures can dip below freezing from time to time. Snowfall occurs during the winter months, but rainfall occurs year round, with most of the rain coming in the months of June through August.

Soccer is the most popular sport in the city. The city has two clubs, Aston Villa and Birmingham City who both play at the St. Andrews football grounds. Both of these teams compete in the elite English Premiere League. Aston Villa has won the league championship seven times.

Some local Birmingham breweries are the Ansells, Davenports, Mithcells and Butlers, and the Aston Manor. Aston Manor is the largest brewery in the city and the most well known as well.

Birmingham Airport is the sixth busiest airport in the United Kingdom. It services the greater Birmingham area with daily flights to other cities in Europe and North America.
