 A Traveler's Guide to Buffalo

Buffalo is the second largest city in the state of New York behind New York City. It is located in the western portion of the state on the shore of Lake Erie at the head of the Niagara River. Downtown Buffalo is only 17 miles away from Niagara Falls and 100 miles away from Toronto.

Buffalo has a continental climate which is characterized by high precipitation due to its location on the Great Lakes. Winters are cold and snowy and summers are wet and warm. The hottest month is July when temperatures usually stay in the 80's Fahrenheit. The coldest month is January when temperatures usually don't get above freezing. The months with the most precipitation in Buffalo are June and August.

Buffalo has been called "The City of Trees" because of the beautiful vegetation that grows in and around the city. There are several parks in the city, such as Olmsted Park. The Olmsted Park is listed as a national historic site and is maintained by the Buffalo Olmsted Parks Conservancy.

There is quite a bit of waterfront in the city because of its location on Lake Erie. The city uses its waterfront property to ship goods as well as generate hydro electric power for the city. Buffalo is home to over 50 private and public art galleries. The most popular one in the city is the Albright - Knox Art Gallery. Each year the city hosts several street festivals that attract visitors from all over. The two most popular are the Allentown Art Festival and the Elmwood Festival of the Arts. The Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra performs at these venues and is generally recognized as one of the finest orchestral groups in the northeast.

There are two professional sports teams that call Buffalo home. The Bills compete in the National Football League and the Sabres compete in the National Hockey League. There are a few other minor league teams such as the Bisons, Bandits, FC Buffalo, and Flash that compete in baseball, lacrosse, and soccer.
