Madrid Quick Facts
A Traveler's Guide to Madrid
Madrid is the largest city in Spain, as well as the third largest city in Europe behind London, England and Berlin, Germany. It is one of the southernmost cities in Europe. More tourists visit Madrid each year than any other city in Spain. This is due to several factors, but the most significant factors are the favorable climate and the rich cultural heritage of the city.
Madrid is one of Europe's oldest cities. It has been under the control of many empires throughout history, including the Roman Empire. Much of this past is preserved in the architecture, literature, and culture of Madrid.
Madrid is at a higher elevation that most other Spanish cities, and because of this winters can be cool with occasional snowfall. Summer temperatures are pleasant and rarely exceed the 90 degree Fahrenheit mark on the thermometer.
One of the most popular outdoor destinations with tourists is the famous Parque del Retiro. El Parque is a large outdoor park in the center of the city which is famous for its trees and local foliage. A large lake in the center of the park was once used by Spanish royalty to recreate mock naval battles, but today it is a popular boating spot.
Madrid is widely known for having some of the premiere art museums in all of Europe. Art critics and fans travel by the thousands to Madrid each year to tour the many famous museums in the city. The Golden Triangle of Art is an area where three of the city's most famous museums are situated right next to each other. The three are the Prado Museum, the Thyssen Bornemisza, and the Reina Sofia Museum.
One of the most important things to most residents of Madrid is the city's local football club, Real Madrid. Real Madrid competes in La Liga and plays its home matches at Santiago Bernabeu Stadium.
Madrid is serviced by Barajas Airport. Barajas is one of the top 20 busiest airports in the world and serves as the home for Iberian Airlines. RENFE is the country's railway system that offers transport to all regions of Spain.
