Milan Quick Facts
A Traveler's Guide to Milan
Milan is the second largest city in Italy. It is located in the upper north of the country, near the base of the Italian Alps. It is a very beautiful city and recently it has become a very popular destination for tourists from all over the world. Originally a Celtic and then Roman settlement, Milan has been under the control of many nations, including Italy, Austria, Spain, and France.
The city was devastated during World War 2 and the Nazi occupation of the 1940's. Milan became the center for resistance to Nazi occupation by the end of the war, and after the war was over the city grew because of the influx of immigrants from poorer regions of southern Italy and other parts of Europe that were especially hit hard by the war. Because of this the city is very cosmopolitan, with residents from many countries. This has caused the culture of the city to take on a very multi-cultural dynamic. This translates to diverse architecture, music, and food. Milan has become famous as the fashion capital of the world.
The weather is quite pleasant in Milan, with summer temperatures averaging in the 70's Fahrenheit and winter temperatures averaging in the high 30's Fahrenheit. Because of the city's elevation and proximity to the Alps, snowfall is relatively common during the winter months.
The heart of Milan is the Piazza del Duomo, the most central and most important square in Milan. Many of Milan's most famous buildings line the Piazza del Duomo, including the Royal Palace of Milan, the Milan Cathedral, and the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II. An example of more contemporary architecture in Milan is Velasca Tower.
There are two major football clubs that call Milan home, AC Milan and Internazionale Milano. Both of these teams compete in European Cup and Champions League play. Their annual matches against each other draw some of the largest crowds in all of Italy.
There are two major airports that service Milan and the surrounding areas, Malpensa International Airport and Linate Airport. Both are international airports, but Linate is used primarily for domestic and short range international flights. Malpensa handles all the long distance international flights in and out of Milan.
