Moscow is a city that is located in the western portion of the country of Russia. It is the capital and largest city in Russia, as well as the seventh largest city in the world by population. The city was named after the river in 1147. The city was originally a fishing community along the banks of the river. It was attacked and burned by raining Mongols in 1237. The city rebuilt but was under the control of the Tartars. It wasn't until the battle of Lukikovo in 1480 that the city broke free of Tartar rule. Through the Middle Ages the city began to grow in power, influence, and importance. Peter the Great sought to westernize Moscow and Russia for that matter. He sent architects, chefs, and scholars to study European ways and to replicate it in Moscow. The city was sacked and burned by Napoleon in the early 19th century, but again it rebuilt and became more powerful than ever. During World War 2 Moscow became an important military hub for the Soviet Republic and it was the home of the USSR headquarters during the Cold War.

Moscow has a humid continental climate, which means warm summers and cool winters. Summer temperatures generally stay in the 80's Fahrenheit and winter temperatures can dip well below freezing from time to time. Snowfall occurs during the winter months, but rainfall occurs year round, with most of the rain coming in the months of June through August. At times snowfall is severe during the winter months.

There are five major airports that service Moscow. Sheremetyevo, Comodedovo, Bykovo, Ostafeyevo, and Vnukovo International Airports offer flights around the world and to other cities in Russia. Sheremetyevo is the one most commonly used by foreign visitors.
