 A Traveler's Guide to Nassau

Nassau is a city that is located in the Caribbean island nation chain of the Bahamas. It is the capital and largest city of the island chain. Nearly seventy percent of the entire population of the Bahamas lives in Nassau. It is a multi cultural city that attracts visitors from all over the world because of its beautiful beaches and luxurious resort hotels. English is the primary spoken language of the Bahamas, although certain parts are predominantly Spanish or even French speaking.

The area around Nassau was primarily a pirate port for decades during the 18th century. The first permanent settlers came around the time of the American War for Independence when thousands of Americans and African slaves moved to the city to get away from the war to the north. The first settlers built an economy based primarily on fishing, farming, and shipping. As more and more people moved to the area to do business word spread about the beauty of the island and the friendliness of its inhabitants. Soon tourism became the most lucrative business in the islands.

Nassau has a humid tropical climate, which means hot summers and mild winters. Summer temperatures can reach into the 90's Fahrenheit from time to time but winter temperatures rarely dip below 50. Rainfall occurs year round, but it occurs most heavily during the summer months of June through August. The islands are vulnerable to the hurricanes that come through the Caribbean Sea from time to time.

Lynden Pindling International Airport is the largest commercial airport in the Bahamian Islands and is located about nine miles west of downtown Nassau. It offers daily flights with major domestic carriers to cities in the US, in addition to international carriers with flights to cities in Canada, Mexico, South America, Europe, Asia, and the Middle East.

The city is a famous stop for cruise vessels that are touring the Caribbean. It is one of the most visited ports of call in the world. Paradise Island is the main resort location in the city and is responsible for attracting thousands of people each year.
