Traveler Advice on Orlando ?
A Traveler's Guide to Orlando
Orlando is a city in the center of the south Florida peninsula. It is currently the county seat of the county of Orange and is the fifth largest city in the state of Florida. Historically, Orlando and the areas surrounding it were the center of the Florida citrus industry, but in recent years the agricultural industry has given way to tourism. Orlando is very popular with American and foreign tourists. During the second Seminole War, the US government built Fort Gatlin just to the south of where downtown Orlando is today. Pioneer settlers didn't move to the outpost in large numbers until the 1850's when the Seminole Wars had ended and peace came to the region. Most of these early residents were citrus farmers and cattle herders. Orlando continued to grow with the establishment of several US military instillations nearby. The city grew steadily until the year 1965 when the population began to explode. That year was the year that Walt Disney announced that he would open a theme park, Disneyworld, in Orlando. Disney reportedly picked Orlando over Miami and Tampa because of the relative protection that the inland city offered against hurricanes. The climate of Orlando is humid subtropical with hot, humid summers and very mild winters. Summer temperatures generally stay in the low 90's Fahrenheit, and winter temperatures rarely dip below 40 degrees Fahrenheit. Because of the moist climate, precipitation is abundant in Orlando with most of the rain coming in the summer months. Hurricanes occasionally hit Orlando. By far the most popular attractions for tourists in Orlando are the theme parks. In addition to Disneyworld there is Universal Studios Orlando, Disney's Hollywood Studios, and Epcot Center. The Disneyworld Resort alone attracts millions of visitors each year. Orlando is also home to some of the most prestigious golf courses in the United States including Bay Hill Club and Lodge.Orlando International Airport is the closest and largest airport to the downtown Orlando area.
