 A Traveler's Guide to Palermo

Palermo is a city that is located on the northern coast of the island of Sicily. Sicily is an island just to the southeast of the peninsula of Italy. It is a part of Italy and is under the jurisdiction of the Italian government. Palermo is the capital of Sicily as well as the largest city on the island. It is one of the largest cities in Italy and is famous for its rich culture and history. It is in the Tyrrhenian Sea which is a part of the much larger Mediterranean Sea. Italian is the official spoken and written language of Palermo.

It was first settled by the Phonecians and later by the Greeks. The Greeks called the place "Panormus" which means "largest port". The Italian translation of Panormus is Palermo. Sicily was under the control of the Roman Empire, and following its collapse it was under the rule of Arab dynasties. Eventually the Arabs were removed from power and the island became a nation unto itself. It was united with the rest of Italy in 1860.

Palermo has a Mediterranean climate which means mild temperatures year round. Summer temperatures generally stay in the 70's or 80's Fahrenheit while winter temperatures rarely dip below 40 degrees Fahrenheit. Summer is the dry season with scarce rain. Most of the areas rainfall occurs during the months of January through March.

There are many beautiful historic sites to see in the city. The Palazzo dei Normanni is one of the most well preserved palaces in Italy. It reflects Norman architecture and was built on the remains of an Arab fortress. The Museo Archeologico Regionale is one of the primary museums in Italy. It houses artifacts and displays from Greek, Roman, Carthaginian, and Etruscan civilizations. It is one of the most diverse museums in Europe.

Palermo International Airport services the greater Palermo metropolitan area. It is also known as Falcone-Borsellino Airport.
