Fayetteville is a city located in the southern portion of the state of North Carolina. It is the fifth largest city in the state and is located on the banks of the Cape Fear River.

Fayetteville was originally two separate towns on the Cape Fear River. They were frontier trading towns that used the river to transport their goods. After the War for Independence they were united and named in honor of General Lafayette, a famous French general who greatly aided the cause of the American colonials during the war. The name was changed to Fayetteville some time later. The city saw extensive action during the Civil War, even being occuppied by Union forces for a time. The city rebuilt after the war and saw a huge spike in growth following World War 2. The nearby construction of Fort Bragg and Pope Air Force Base brought revenue and citizens to the area. That has led to Fayetteville being referred to as a "military city" with many military families living there. That has caused the city to continue to grow and prosper.

Fayetteville has a humid subtropical climate, which means hot, humid summers and cool, moist winters. The area receives most of its rainfall in the months of July and August. Summer temperatures generally stay in the 80's Fahrenheit and winter temperatures rarely dip below freezing. Snowfall is rare in Fayetteville.

There are several museums and art galleries in Fayetteville. Among the most popular are the Fayetteville Museum of Art, the Airborne and Special Operations Museum, the Cape Fear Botanical Gardens, the Museum of the Cape Fear Historical Complex, Heritage Square, and the Cape Fear River Trail.

Fayetteville is serviced by the Fayetteville Regional Airport. It is a relatively small, local airport. It is serviced by US Airways, Delta, and American Airlines.
