Traveler Advice on Venice ?
A Traveler's Guide to Venice
| Venice is a city that is located on the western coast of the US state of Florida. Florida is the most extreme southeastern state in the continental United States. It is bordered to the north by Alabama and Georgia, to the west by the Gulf of Mexico, to the south by the Caribbean Sea, and to the east by the Atlantic Ocean. It is the primary city in the Bradenton – Sarasota – Venice metropolitan area. English is the official language of Venice. Venice has a humid subtropical climate, which means hot summers and mild winters. Summer temperatures can reach into the 90's Fahrenheit from time to time but winter temperatures rarely dip below 40. Rainfall occurs year round, but it occurs most heavily during the summer months of June through August. Thunderstorms can be severe from time to time. The city is vulnerable to hurricanes because of its location in southern Florida. Venice was first settled in the mid 19th century as a small fishing village. It stayed relatively small until 1911 when the railroad was built through it. That brought the possibility of shipping and jobs. More people moved to the city and began to cultivate citrus crops around the area. Venice Air Force Base was built around the time of World War 2 and then given back to the city of Venice after the war to be used for commercial aviation. The waters around Venice are great for diving; however there is a considerable population of sharks that are indigenous to the waters around the city. This has given the city of Venice the nickname "The Shark Tooth Capital of the World". Divers come from all around to dive in search of various shark teeth. Each year the city hosts the Sharks Tooth Festival which celebrates the many fossilized sharks teeth that can be found in the waters around the city. There are several nationally recognized historical landmarks in Venice, which include the Blalock House, the Eagle Point Historical District, the Triangle Inn, and the Hotel Venice.
