Alexandria is a city that is located in the upper northeastern portion of the state of Virginia. It is located on the western bank of the Potomac River and is 5 miles south of Washington DC. The city is mostly full of people who work in DC or for the government. It is the seventh largest city in the state, but the wealthiest city as far as per capita income is concerned.
The city is named after Philip Alexander II, whose estate made up much of the early settlement of the city. The city was at one time designated to be a part of Washington DC itself, but later it returned to the state of Virginia. Alexandria was occupied by Union forces during the US Civil War and was the site of some of the war's earliest violence. After the war, the city annexed the Town of Potomac. Since then it has continued to grow as a suburb of the nation's capital.
Alexandria has a humid subtropical climate, which means hot, humid summers and cool winters. Summer temperatures generally stay in the 80's Fahrenheit and winter temperatures generally stay in the 40's or 50's. Snowfall happens occasionally, and most of the area's rainfall comes in the summer months of June through August.
Alexandria has one of the largest park systems in the state. There are over 70 regional parks and over 30 recreational centers. Chinquapin is the largest and offers facilities for all major sports, including tennis and swimming. Cameron Run Regional Park contains its own Water Park, miniature golf course, and batting cages. The Mount Vernon Trail is a popular jogging/biking trail that runs through Alexandria and into Washington DC.
Historical monuments abound in Alexandria. Some of the most popular are the George Washington Masonic National Memorial, the Mount Vernon Estate, Robert E. Lee's home, and the Alexandria Black History Resource Center.
While there are no professional teams in the city, Alexandria does have a minor league baseball team called the Potomac Nationals that compete in double. A league baseball.
The closest major airport to Alexandria is Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. Washington Dulles International and Baltimore-Washington International are also within driving distance.
