A Traveler's Guide to Arkadelphia

Arkadelphia is a city that is located in the south central region of the US state of Arkansas. It was one of the state's first industrial centers for many years. The state of Arkansas is located in the mid-southern region of the continental United States. It is bordered to the north by the state of Missouri, to the east by the states of Tennessee and Mississippi, to the south by the state of Louisiana, and to the west by the states of Texas and Oklahoma. Little Rock is the capital and largest city in the state.

Arkadelphia is home to two universities, Henderson State University and Ouachita Baptist University. The area was first settled in 1809 by a man named John Hemphill who owned and operated a nearby salt works factory. It was Arkansas' first industrial complex. It was called Blakelytown for many years until 1839 when the name was changed to Arkadelphia. The name comes from the Greek root word "adelphia" which means "brother" or "place".

The Ouachita National Forest is a popular place for hiking as is the DeGray Lake Resort State Park. Arkadelphia Aquatic Park is a city Parks and Recreation Department water park owned by the city that is open during the hot summer months.

The city of Arkadelphia, as with most of the state of Arkansas, has a humid subtropical climate. This means that temperatures are hot to mild year round. Summer temperatures can get into the 90's Fahrenheit, and the days can be very humid and muggy. The winter temperatures stay mild, rarely dipping below freezing. Snowfall is extremely rare in Arkadelphia, although the city does see quite a bit of rain during the months of June, July, and August.

There are several large airports in the state of Arkansas. Some of the largest are Little Rock National Airport, Fort Smith Regional Airport, Northwest Arkansas Regional Airport, and Texarkana Regional Airport. These are the largest major airports near Arkadelphia and they offer daily flights with major domestic carriers to cities in the US, in addition to international carriers with flights to cities in Canada, Mexico, South America, Europe, Asia, and the Middle East.
