Baton Rouge Quick Facts
A Traveler's Guide to Baton Rouge
Baton Rouge is the second largest city in the state of Louisiana and is located in the southeastern portion of the state. The only larger city in the state is New Orleans. It is also the capital of the state of Louisiana. Its location on the Mississippi River has contributed to the city's growth and importance. The name of the city is French meaning "red stick". The name is generally traced back to French settlers who referred to the locals by that phrase.
The city became the state capital in 1849. When the US Civil War began it had already become a thriving river town. The city was occupied by the Union forces during the war and only handed back to locals after the war was over. The city continued to grow as a financial and business center along the river. In 2005 and 2006 the city's population grew immensely as inhabitants of New Orleans who had been displaced by Hurricane Katrina moved to Baton Rouge.
Because of its southern location and spot on the water the climate in Baton Rouge is a humid subtropical climate with hot, humid summers and mild winters. Rainfall is very common, with most of the rain coming in the months of January through March. Baton Rouge still maintains its identity as a river shipping port. It is the farthest spot upriver that sea tankers and ships can travel. The largest industry in the city is oil production and refinement. ExxonMobil is headquartered there.
One of the largest employers in the city is Louisiana State University, which competes in over 20 sports in the NCAA Division 1 Southeastern Conference. A popular local event each year is the Pennington Balloon Festival
which attracts balloon enthusiasts from all over the country. The MardiGras celebrations are second only to those held in New Orleans to the south. The closest airport to Baton Rouge is the Baton Rouge Metropolitan Airport, located ten miles north of downtown. It connects with domestic carriers to Dallas, Atlanta, Houston, and many other southern cities.
