A Traveler's Guide to Cambridge

Cambridge is a city that is located in the eastern portion of the US state of Massachusetts. It is in Middlesex County and is a part of the greater Boston metropolitan area. It is a seat of government for Middlesex County along with the city of Lowell. English is the primary spoken and written language in Cambridge.

The city was founded in the mid 17th century when Harvard College was founded nearby for the purpose of training ministers and preachers. The town was originally named "Newtowne" but in 1638 city officials decided to change the name to Cambridge in honor of Cambridge University in England. The city grew steadily for decades until 1792 when the Boston Bridge was constructed which linked the area directly to Boston and made travel between the cities much more convenient. The city became an industrial hub. Harvard University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology both became very respected institutions of higher learning in Cambridge, and soon the city became known as the intellectual center of the country.

Cambridge has a humid continental climate, which means warm summers and cool winters. Summer temperatures generally stay in the 80's Fahrenheit and winter temperatures can dip below freezing Fahrenheit from time to time. Snowfall occurs regularly during the winter months, but rainfall occurs year round, with most of the rain coming in the months of June through August.

There are many sites of historical and cultural significance to see in Cambridge. The Harvard Art Museum, the Busch-Reisinger Museum, the Fogg Art Museum, and the Arthur M. Sackler Museum are some of the most visited museums in the city. The Peabody Museum of Arhaeology and the Harvard Museum of Natural History are well respected museums in their fields.

Boston Logan International Airport is the closest major airport to Cambridge. It offers flights to cities in the US, Canada, South America, Asia, Europe, and the Middle East each day.
