Charleston is a city that is located in the southeastern portion of the US state of South Carolina. It is one of the oldest cities in the state and is the second largest in the state. The city struggled through the civil rights movements of the late 20th century and today it is one of the most financially successful cities in the state of South Carolina.

Independence has a humid subtropical climate, which means hot summers and mild winters. Summer temperatures can reach into the 90's Fahrenheit from time to time but winter temperatures rarely dip below 40. Rainfall occurs year round, but it occurs most heavily during the summer months of June through August. The city is also vulnerable to occasional hurricanes that come up the Atlantic coast of the United States.

The area is serviced by Charleston International Airport, which is located just north of the city and is one of the busiest airports in the state. Charleston Air Force Base is also located near the airport, but its airfields are only used for military aircraft, not commercial.
