A Traveler's Guide to Corpus Christi

Corpus Christi is located on the southern coast of Texas and is the government seat for the county of Neuces. It is the eighth largest city in the state of Texas. It's name is from the Latin meaning "the body of Christ". It was given that name by the Spanish who settled it in honor of the sacrament of the Eucharist. Founded in 1839 as a trading post, Corpus Christi was the site of hostility during the Mexican American War. General Zachary Taylor set up camp there and established it as a colonial American settlement. It was incorporated in 1852.

Corpus Christi has a humid subtropical climate, very similar to other areas along the Gulf Coast. The warm waters of the Gulf Stream keep the temperatures in Corpus Christi very mild and frequently hot. The hottest months are June and July when temperatures can eclipse 100 degrees Fahrenheit. January is the coolest month with temperatures averaging in the 50's Fahrenheit. The city receives most of it's precipitation in September.

There are many things for locals and visitors to see in Corpus Christi. The Texas State Aquarium is located in the North Beach area and is one of the largest and most visited aquariums in all the state of Texas. Arguable the most popular activity for tourists to Corpus Christi is touring the USS Lexington Museum on the Bay. The USS Lexington is a retired WW2 aircraft carrier that fought in the Pacific theater of the war. It has since been retired and is now a floating museum of WW2 memorabilia. Thousands of visitors each year tour the flight deck and below deck hangars of this once mighty carrier.

Next to the Lexington you will find the museum district of Corpus Christi. You will find the Corpus Christi Museum of Science and History, the South Texas Institute for the Arts, and the Harbor Playhouse Theater there. The Corpus Christi Botanical Gardens are also nearby and offer a chance to view some of the plant life that lives in and around the city.
