Costa Mesa is a city that is located in the southern portion of the US state of California. It is located in Orange County and is one of the largest cities in the county. The area has been inhabited by locals for centuries. The first Europeans to settle in the region of modern day Costa Mesa were the Spanish in 1801. When California became part of the United States settlers moved to the area and set up farms and orchards. The area was wiped out by a major flood in the 1880’s. It rebuilt and the town was called Harper, after the most successful farmer who lived there. Harper changed the name to “Costa Mesa” which means "coast table-land" in Spanish because of how beautiful the scenery was around the area. During World War 2 the city grew especially quickly because of the construction of Santa Ana Army Air Base nearby which brought soldiers and their families to the area, many of which stayed in Costa Mesa after the war was over.

Costa Mesa has a Mediterranean climate which means mild temperatures year round. Summer temperatures generally stay in the 70's or 80's Fahrenheit while winter temperatures rarely dip below 40 degrees Fahrenheit. Summer is the dry season with scarce rain. Most of the areas rainfall occurs during the months of January through March. Snow rarely falls in Costa Mesa, if ever.
