The area is somewhat vulnerable to hurricanes that cross the southern peninsula of Florida and enter the Gulf of Mexico.

The most popular access beach is the Henderson Beach State Recreational Area. Summer activities include sunbathing, swimming, parasailing, boating, fishing, and water skiing. In addition to the natural surroundings, visitors come to Destin for some of the annual festivals that it hosts. One such festival is the Destin Seafood Festival which takes place each October and features some of the best seafood in the south.
