A Traveler's Guide to Elizabeth

Elizabeth is a city that is located in the US state of New Jersey.  It is in Union County as is currently the fourth largest city in the state.  In 2008 Popular Science magazine named it one of "America's 50 Greenest Cities" because of its attempts to cut greenhouse gas emissions in its city limits.  English is the primary language spoken in Elizabeth.

The city was originally named Elizabethtown.  Many people assume it was named in honor of Queen Elizabeth I of England, but that is not the case. The town was actually named in honor of the wife of Vice Admiral George Carteret, who was one of the first proprietors of the New Jersey colony.

The city was the site of much fighting between colonials and British during the American War for Independence.  It remained a township until its incorporation in 1855.  In 1895 the Singer Sewing Machine Company came to town and employed thousands of people.  This greatly increased the population of Elizabeth.  Several other businesses either moved to or began in Elizabeth over the years, including the Electric Boat Company and Lewis Nixon's Crescent Shipyard.

Elizabeth has a humid continental climate, which means warm summers and cold winters.  Summer temperatures can reach the 80's Fahrenheit but winter temperatures can dip well below freezing for days on end.  Snowfall is common during the winter months in Elizabeth.  Rainfall is relatively common throughout the rest of the year, with most of the rainfall coming in the months of June through August.

Elizabeth is well connected to the rest of New England by train.  The NJ Transit North Jersey Coast Line and Northeast Corridor Line are the two largest train stations in the city.  The city has plans to connect itself via train to Newark.

The closest major airports to Elizabeth are Newark Liberty International Airport and John F. Kennedy Airport.  The Columbian airline Avianca offers bus service from JFK airport to Elizabeth for passengers flying on their airline.  Soon Elizabeth will be connected to Newark Liberty International Airport by train.
