Escondido Quick Facts
A Traveler's Guide to Escondido
Escondido is a city that is located in the southern portion of the state of California, just north of the city of San Diego. It is one of the oldest cities in southern California. It gets its name from the Spanish word meaning "hidden" because it is located in a small valley that is surrounded by hills and the city appears to be hidden from view.Escondido was an agricultural community originally, famous for its grapes, oranges, lemons, and walnuts. It was incorporated in 1888 and soon the Santa Fe and Southern Pacific railroads were directed into the city and its population began to boom. Soon it began to grow avocados and more and more people moved to Escondido.
Because it is further inland than San Diego, Escondido has warmer temperatures throughout the year. The summer temperatures can get into the low 90's Fahrenheit and winter temperatures generally stay above the 45 degree mark. Rainfall is scarce throughout the year but it comes most often in the months of January, February, and March.
There are three major lakes in the city, which provide recreation and fishing. Swimming, boating, fishing, and water sports are popular during the hot winter months. These lakes are Dixon Lake, Lake Wohlford, and Lake Hodges.
Downtown Escondido has become more popular recently after several developments and additions have made it more current. Recently the Mingei International Museum opened in the downtown area. The California Center for the Arts which has two theaters, an educational complex, a conference center, and a visual arts museum.
