A Traveler's Guide to Fontana

Fontana is a city that is located in the southern portion of the state of California in San Bernardino County. It is one of the 20 largest cities in the state and is one of the largest in the county. The city can trace its beginnings back to Azariel Miller who founded it in 1913. It began as a community of orchards, chicken ranches, and vineyards just off of US Route 66. During World War 2 the area's population skyrocketed when Henry Kaiser built a steel mill in the city.

The city became a popular spot for drag racing and several museums have been set up to commemorate the city's history in the automobile field. The city is located inland away from the cooling ocean breezes that the coastal cities experience. Summer temperatures can soar above 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Winter temperatures stay mild, rarely dipping below 50 degrees Fahrenheit. Rainfall is rare, but it comes in the months of January through March.

There are several fine arts and cultural venues in the city. One of which is the Center State Theater which was built in 1937 and recently renovated and opened to the public. The Art Depot is one of the oldest community centers in the city. It used to be a freight depot for the railroad but was converted to an art studio and now offers classes and activities to the community.

One of the biggest attractions to the city of Fontana is the Auto Club Speedway. This racetrack hosts several NASCAR events throughout the year. It is built where the old Kaiser Steel Mill used to be. Fontana Park is a facility in the town that offers a community center, swimming pools, skating rinks, play areas, and hiking trails.

Another popular spot with tourists is the Mary Vagle Science and Nature Center. There are hand on displays and activities for visitors of all ages, including a pond, reptile viewing area, dioramas, and hiking trails.

The closest major airport to Fontana is Ontario International Airport. It is only ten minutes away. There are other airports in the general area, such as Los Angeles International, Burbank, Orange County, and Long Beach.
