A Traveler's Guide to Fort Wayne

Fort Wayne is the second largest city in the state of Indiana, behind Indianapolis. It is currently ranked the 72nd largest city in the United States. It is located just a few miles from the Ohio border to the east and the Michigan border to the north. The Fort Wayne Metropolitan Area incorporates several counties. The town was originally a frontier wilderness fort, built by and named after General Mad Anthony Wayne in 1794. It was intended to be a refuge from frontier native Americans. It's location on the St. Joseph River made it an ideal trading post for Europeans in the frontier. The fort grew to become a town and then a city, and upon completion of the Erie Canal the city began to grow exponentially.

Fort Wayne's economy today is based primarily on insurance, manufacturing, education, defense, and security. It's weather is a humid continental climate with four separate and unique seasons. The summer months are hot and humid with temperatures generally staying in the 80's Fahrenheit. The winter months are cold and often snowy with temperatures reaching well below freezing.

Fort Wayne is known for its many annual festivals. The BBQ RibFest is a four day event held in June which showcases barbecue cooks and musicians from all around the country. Germanfest is a festival in June that celebrates German food, culture, and music. GreekFest is a similar event held in June that celebrated the large Greek population in Fort Wayne by putting on display Greek foods, music, and dancing. The Johnny Appleseed Festival is held in September at Johnny Appleseed Park at the burial site of John Chapman, aka Johnny Appleseed. The festival includes food and crafts related to the life of Johnny Appleseed. The Three Rivers Festival is the largest of all the annual festivals, attracting almost half a million visitors each year. It takes place in mid July for nine days and features parades, races, a fair, and fireworks.
