A Traveler's Guide to Gainesville

Gainesville is a city that is located in central northern Florida in the United States of America. It is located in Alachua County and is the largest city in the county. In 2007 the city was voted as one of the best places to “Live and Play” by National Geographic Magazine.

The city was officially founded in 1854 and it was incorporated two years later in 1856. It was named after General Edmund P. Gaines, commander of the US Army during the Seminole Wars. The city saw a small amount of fighting during the US Civil War. Following the war the city became an important hub for citrus shipping and cattle grazing. The major north/south railroad in the state of Florida passed through it and made it a natural shipping depot. The city suffered from some severe winter freezes and most of the citrus industry moved south to Orlando permanently.

Gainesville has a humid subtropical climate, which means hot summers and mild winters. Summer temperatures can reach into the 90's Fahrenheit from time to time but winter temperatures rarely dip below 40. Rainfall occurs year round, but it occurs most heavily during the summer months of June through August. Thunderstorms are common from time to time.

Today the city is primarily a university town. It is home to the University of Florida. The Gators compete in over 20 men’s and women’s sports in the NCAA Division 1 Southeastern Conference. The university was organized and founded by the Florida Legislature in 1905. The facilities of the university have become home to several world renowned doctors and scientists. The popular sports drink Gatorade was invented at the University of Florida for the purpose of refreshing Gator athletes during football games.

The greater Gainesville area is serviced by the Gainesville Regional Airport. It offers connecting flights to larger airports nearby, such as Atlanta, Jacksonville, Orlando, and Miami. These airports offer daily flights to major cities domestically and internationally.
