A Traveler's Guide to Garden Grove

Garden Grove is a city that is located in Orange County in the southwestern portion of the state of California. It is a rapidly growing city that is becoming more and more popular with residents of southern California.

The city was founded in 1874 by Alonzo Cook. It was a very rural area that was surrounded by citrus groves and almond farms. It wasn't until 1905 when the railroad was connected to it that the city began to really grow. Once the railroad was completed the area became a popular spot to import produce from. Much of the downtown area was damaged or destroyed in the Long Beach earthquake of 1933. The area wasn't incorporated until 1956.

The largest ethnicity to move to Garden Grove has been the Asian community. Mostly Vietnamese and Korean immigrants have moved to Garden Grove. There are many popular southern California landmarks nearby. Quite possibly the largest and most lucrative is Disneyland Resort in neighboring Anaheim. The Disney boom has brought hotels, restaurants, and shops to the area. Anaheim and Garden Grove have some of the most upscale, well developed neighborhoods and shopping areas in Orange County. Quite possibly the biggest annual festival in Garden Grove is the Strawberry Festival, which is held over Memorial Day weekend each year. This festival pays homage to the agricultural past of Garden Grove. Activities include a parade, carnival rides, and live musical performances. The Crystal Cathedral is also a very popular spot with visitors.

Garden Grove has a Mediterranean climate, which means mild temperatures year round. Summers rarely get above 80 degrees Fahrenheit and winters rarely get below 50 degrees Fahrenheit. While rainfall is rare, most of it comes in the months of January through March.

Several famous people hail from Garden Grove, including Steve Martin, Lenny Dykstra, and Troy Polamalu.

The closest major airport is Orange County John Wayne Airport. Los Angeles International is also nearby, as are Ontario International Airport, Burbank, and Long Beach Airports.
