A Traveler's Guide to Jersey City

Jersey City is the second largest city in the state of New Jersey behind Newark. It is currently the 78th largest city in the United States. Jersey City is technically included in the New York metropolitan area but maintains its own name and jurisdiction. It is located across from Lower Manhattan between the Upper New York Bay and the Hudson River.

The city was originally a Dutch settlement but later changed hands to the British before the American War for Independence. The city saw several battles during the war and later was a key part of the freed slave movement called the Underground Railroad. The city naturally became a shipping and docking hub because of its location on the water. Manufacturing became important as well because of the readiness of water transit. Many immigrants from Europe came to Jersey City to find work. This caused the atmosphere of the city to be very diverse and cosmopolitan. The city has become a center for business recently, and several high profile usinesses have made their headquarters here, such as Chase Bank, Goldman Sachs, and Merrill Lynch.

Because of its location in the extreme northeast of the United States, Jersey City experiences mild to hot summers and cold winters. July temperatures generally stay in the 80's Fahrenheit, while January temperatures can dip well below freezing. Snow is common in the months of December through February.

The Jersey City Library is home to one of the city's most popular museums, the Afro-American Historical and Cultural Society Museum, which pays homage to the many contributions that African Americans have made to the United States. The Liberty Science Center is also popular with visitors and contains an interactive science learning center. Ferries from Liberty State Park travel to Liberty Island and Ellis Island.
