Joliet Quick Facts
A Traveler's Guide to Joliet
Joliet is a city that is located in the northeastern portion of the state of Illinois. It is southwest of the city of Chicago and serves as the county seat of government for Will County. It is one of the fastest growing cities in Illinois and the United States. The city can trace its earliest inhabitants back to 1833 when Charles Reed built a cabin on the Des Plaines River. The city was laid out nearby by James Campbell who named the region after his daughter Juliet. The city's name was later changed to Joliet and incorporated in 1852. Most people believe the name was changed to honor the French explorer Louis Jolliet who first discovered the area.
Today, Joliet is dependent on its manufacturing. But recently the city has attempted to lure visitors to itself by making the downtown district more appealing. The city has built two casinos and a new theatre. There are also several landmarks in Joliet that are very popular with visitors and locals alike. The Joliet Area Historical Museum includes art and artifacts from the region's history, the Route 66 Visitors Center houses memorabilia from the nation's first transcontinental highway, and Joliet Prison which was used in the TV series Prison Break are all popular with visitors.
Joliet has a humid continental climate, which means mild summers and cold winters. Summer temperatures rarely exceed the 80's Fahrenheit but winter temperatures can dip below freezing for several days in a row. Snowfall is common in the winter months, and most of the region's rainfall comes in the warm months of June through August.
Chicagoland Speedway in Joliet hosts annual racing events with NASCAR and the Indy Racing League. It has been said that on the days of major races, the number of visitors exceeds the number of residents of Joliet. The city has a rich history with racing and is also home to the Route 66 Raceway which features hot rod drag racing each year.
For the outdoorsman, there are many golf courses and biking/hiking trails throughout the city. Rock Run and Joliet Junction Trails are two of the most popular.
