Snowfall is common in the winter months, and most of the region's rainfall comes in the warm months of June through August.

Chicagoland Speedway in Joliet hosts annual racing events with NASCAR and the Indy Racing League. It has been said that on the days of major races, the number of visitors exceeds the number of residents of Joliet. The city has a rich history with racing and is also home to the Route 66 Raceway which features hot rod drag racing each year.
