Kauai is the largest of the western Hawaiian Islands. It's nickname is the "Garden Isle" because of the lush vegetation and beautiful scenery that can be found on it. Kauai was one of the last islands to join with the legendary King Kamehameha in his Kingdom of Hawaii. The island resisted but eventually gave in and agreed to become part of the larger kingdom. Since then the island has been under the control of several foreign powers, including the Russians and the English. 

Over a million people come to Kauai each year as tourists. Most of these visitors are Americans from the mainland, but a good number of them are Japanese as well. This has made tourism the number one source of income for the island. It used to be that the sugar cane fields brought in the most money on Kauai, but those fields have since either been abandoned or turned into ranching land for horses and cattle. Many exotic kinds of vegetation grow on the island. Avocados, mangos, guavas, papayas, and coffee are all grown on the island and sold commercially. 

The island of Kauai was the first Hawaiian island discovered by the famous British explorer Captain James Cook in 1778. He landed near the modern day town of Waimea. Some of the most popular spots with tourists on the island are the Limahuli Garden and Preserve, Moloaa bay, Poi'pu Beach State Park, Princeville North Shore, and the Sleeping Giant.
