A Traveler's Guide to Lafayette

Lafayette is a city that is located in the southern portion of the US state of Louisiana. It is located in Lafayette Parish and serves as the seat of government for the parish. The city is the center for Louisiana’s Cajun culture because of the large Cajun and Creole presence in the city. English is the official spoken and written language of Lafayette.

The city was originally founded in 1821 and named Vermilionville by a Frenchman named Jean Mouton. Later, in 1884, it was renamed Lafayette in honor of General Gilbery du Motier, marquis de Lafayette, who was a French military hero who greatly helped the United States defeat the British during the US War for Indpendence.

Lafayette has a humid subtropical climate, which means hot summers and mild winters. Summer temperatures can reach into the 90's Fahrenheit from time to time but winter temperatures rarely dip below 40. Rainfall occurs year round, but it occurs most heavily during the summer months of June through August. Thunderstorms are relatively common and the city is even vulnerable to occasional hurricanes because of its proximity to the Gulf of Mexico.

Although the city does not have any professional sports teams to call its own, it is the home to the Ragin’ Cajuns, the athletic teams of the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. The university teams compete in over 15 men's and women's sports.

The Lafayette Natural History Museum and Planetarium is both a museum and a planetarium. The museum is home to several paintings and other works of arts by Louisiana artists. The Cajun Heartland State Fair is one of the largest state fairs held each year in the state. It usually lasts for eleven days and displays the Cajun culture with music, food, and cultural displays. Lafayette Regional Airport offers connecting flights to larger nearby airports such as Dallas-Fort Worth, Memphis, New Orleans, and Atlanta. International flights can be booked into these larger area airports.
