A Traveler's Guide to Lakeland

Lakeland is a city that is located in the central region of the US state of Florida. Florida is the most extreme southeastern state in the continental United States. It is bordered to the north by Alabama and Georgia, to the west by the Gulf of Mexico, to the south by the Caribbean Sea, and to the east by the Atlantic Ocean. Lakeland is the primary city in the Winter Haven - Lakeland metropolitan area in Polk County. English is the official language of Lakeland.

Lakeland has a humid subtropical climate, which means hot summers and mild winters. Summer temperatures can reach into the 90's Fahrenheit from time to time but winter temperatures rarely dip below 40. Rainfall occurs year round, but it occurs most heavily during the summer months of June through August. Thunderstorms can be severe from time to time. The city is vulnerable to occasional hurricanes because of its location in south Florida.

The city of Lakeland was settled in the mid 19th century. It was a small town until the railroads brought workers and businesses to town. In the 1950's and 1960's when more and more people moved to southern Florida the city began to grow by leaps and bounds. The city became home to the Detroit Tigers spring training facility in 1934 and has hosted the Tigers each year since.

The city played an important role in World War 2. Lodwick Airfield was located near Lakeland and was the primary training facility for British pilots during the war. There was very little room to train pilots in Great Britain, so many of them were sent over to Florida to train. These young men stayed in nearby Lakeland and when they were finished with training they went back to Britain to fight the Luftwaffe in the skies over their homeland.

Lakeland Linder Regional Airport is the largest commercial airport that offers flight service to the Lakeland area. It offers daily connecting flights to larger nearby airports such as Orlando, Miami, and Atlanta.
