Lexington is the second largest city in Kentucky and is the sixty-third largest in the United States. It has been called the "Thoroughbred City" and the "Horse Capital of the World". It is located in the middle of Kentucky's Bluegrass region which is famous for its folk music and horse breeding. It was selected as the site for the 2010 FEI World Equestrian Games.

Lexington is in a humid subtropical climate. The hottest month of the year is July with temperatures averaging in the mid 80's Fahrenheit. One of the biggest annual festivals in Lexington is the annual Festival of the Bluegrass. This festival is held the first full weekend of June and is the state's oldest bluegrass festival. Thousands of people come from all over to celebrate bluegrass music and participate in the live performances. Recently, the Gay and Lesbian Service organization has begun organizing a Pride Festival to honor the diverse communities in Lexington.

There are no professional sports teams in Lexington, but the University of Kentucky Wildcats participate in the NCAA Division one sports league. The participate in the Southeastern Conference in all sports. Commonwealth Stadium is home to the Wildcat's football team, but the school's basketball program is by far the most famous program at the school.
