A Traveler's Guide to Lubbock

Lubbock is the eleventh largest city in the state of Texas. It is located in the northwest portion of the state, not too far from the border with New Mexico to the west. Lubbock's nickname is "Hub City" because for the longest time it was the hub of culture and eduation for the South Plains region. The city was named in honor of Texas Ranger Thomas Lubbock who fought with distinction in the US Civil War. 

Texas Tech University is one of the largest employers in the city. It has been in the city of Lubbock since 1923 and has won accolades for its medical school which opened in 1969. The Texas Tech Red Raiders compete in the NCAA Division 1 league in over 20 sports. Many of the cultural and artistic locations in the city are affiliated with Texas Tech University. For example, the city's premiere museum, the Museum of Texas Tech University, is located on the school's campus. It displays thousands of years of local and human history. 

The climate in Lubbock is a semi-arid climate with hot temperatures in the summer and mild temperatures in the winter. Snowfall is frequent in the winter months but most of the precipitation falls in the summer months. 

Lubbock is the hometown of rock legend Buddy Holly. Each year the Buddy Holly Music Festival is held in honor of him and his life's work. The festival features live performances and food. A wildly popular event with tourists is the National Cowboy Symposium and Celebration which celebrates the traditional western American cowboy with demonstrations, art, music, poetry, songs, and cultural displays. 

The Independence Day festival is equally as popular around July 4th. It is considered to be the largest free festival in the entire state.
