A Traveler's Guide to Mesquite

Mesquite is a city that is located in the northeastern region of the US state of Texas. It is a suburb of the greater Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. The primary language of Mesquite is English, although a portion of the population also speaks Spanish.

The region was originally a stop along the Texas and Pacific Railroad line just outside of downtown Dallas. The line ran from Dallas to Shreveport, Louisiana to the south. It was primarily a farming community until the early 20th century. Local crops included corn, sugar, hay, and cotton. The railroad was used to ship the goods to other cities in the area. After World War 2 the city became a suburban town to Dallas. As Dallas grew so grew Mesquite. Today Mesquite embodies much of the "western" feel of Texas and attracts thousands of people each year to its rodeos and other cultural events. The city is also home to several large companies, such as id Software, UPS, and Microsoft products.

Mesquite has a humid subtropical climate, which means hot, humid summers and mild winters. Summer temperatures can climb into the 90's Fahrenheit but winter temperatures are mild, rarely dipping below 40 degrees. Snowfall is very rare in the winter months, but rainfall occurs throughout the year with most of the rain falling in the months of July through September.

The most popular annual event in Mesquite is the Mesquite Championship Rodeo. This rodeo was first held n 1958 and has been a steady fixture of Mesquite culture ever since. Today it is the most widely televised rodeo in the world and celebrities from all over the state and the country make appearances at it. It has grown from being just a rodeo into being a musical venue as well, with many country and folk music stars making appearances and even performing.

The closest major airport to Mesquite is Dallas Fort Worth International Airport. Dallas Fort Worth offers daily flights on major domestic and international carriers to cities all over the United States, Canada, Mexico, Europe, and the Pacific Islands.
