A Traveler's Guide to Moreno Valley

Moreno Valley is a city that is located in the southern portion of the state of California. It is located in Riverside County and is one of the fastest growing cities in southern California. It is closely tied with nearby Riverside.

The area was originally inhabited by Shoshone Native Americans and the first Europeans to settle the area were the Spanish. The area lacked natural water supplies and therefore wasn't settled until much later than the surrounding areas. The first permanent settlers in the area were Americans who moved into the area in the 1850's. The Overland Mail Company traveled through Moreno Valley and established a depot ere. Water was pumped in from nearby Bear Valley and the city began to grow. Later the city of Redlands monopolized the water supply in Bear Valley and the town of Moreno Valley was all but abandoned. It was at this time that the city got its name "Moreno" which is a Spanish word meaning "dark".

The city experienced a rebirth of sorts in the early 20th century when March Field was constructed nearby. The Field was a base for the Army Air Service, later to become the US Air Force. The base became a popular spot to train pilots during World War 2.

Moreno Valley is located in an inland desert. This gives it an arid climate, which means hot, dry summers and mild winters. The average high in the summer time can exceed 90 degrees Fahrenheit. The temperatures in the winter months generally stay above the 40 degree mark. Rainfall is scarce in Moreno Valley, but it mostly comes in the months of January through March. The city was home to the Riverside International Raceway for over 30 years until it closed in 1989. There are no major commercial airports in the city of Moreno Valley, however the Los Angeles area is not far and there are several airports to choose from there. They include Los Angeles International Airport, Ontario International Airport, Orange County (John Wayne) Airport, Long Beach Airport, and Burbank Airport.
