A Traveler's Guide to Murfreesboro

Murfreesboro is a city that is located in the near center of the US state of Tennessee. Tennessee is located in the eastern portion of the country, almost equidistant between the northern and southern borders. Murfreesboro is in Rutherford County and serves as the seat of government for the county. Some consider it to be a suburb of Nashville, but Nashville is almost 40 miles away. Murfreesboro is its own town with its own unique characteristics. As recently as 2006 the city was voted as one of the top 100 best places to live in the US by Money Magazine. English is the primary spoken and written language in Murfreesboro.

The city was founded in 1811 and was originally named "Cannonsburgh", but later the name was changed to Murfreesboro in honor of Revolutionary War hero Colonel Hardy Murfree. Because of its central location in the state it was made the state capital for eight years until the capital moved to Nashville nearby.

The area around Murfreesboro was originally a very fertile agricultural area, but by the mid 19th century several colleges and universities had moved to it, earning it the nickname "The Athens of Tennessee". Today Middle Tennessee State University is located in Murfreesboro and is one of the largest undergraduate universities in the state. World War 2 brought industry to Murfreesboro. Several factories were built and maintained even until recent times.

Murfreesboro has a humid subtropical climate, which means hot, humid summers and mild winters. Summer temperatures can reach into the 90's Fahrenheit from time to time but winter temperatures rarely dip below 40. Rainfall occurs year round, but it occurs most heavily during the summer months of June through August.

Murfreesboro is within driving distance of Nashville International Airport, which offers daily flights with major domestic carriers to cities in the US, in addition to international carriers with flights to cities in Canada, Mexico, South America, Europe, Asia, and the Middle East.
