A Traveler's Guide to Naperville

Naperville is a city that is located in the northeastern portion of the state of Illinois. It is the fifth largest city in the state and has been voted as the second best place to live in the United States as of 2006. At one time a quiet farming village, Naperville has become a business city with several corporate offices downtown.

The city owes its beginning and its name to Joseph Naper who arrived in the area in 1831 at the banks of the DuPage River with his family and some friends. He founded what has been called Naper's Settlement. A few years later the settlement had a fort and several hundred residents. It was incorporated in 1857 and was predominantly a rural community for most of its beginnings, until the railroad and toll ways came to town. Those connected the city to Chicago and other surrounding big cities.

Today the city relies primarily on technology companies and hospitals to employ large numbers of the population. Companies such as the Illinois Technology and Research Corridor, Bell Labs, Western Electric, Amoco, and Edward Hospital are headquartered in downtown Naperville.

Naperville has a humid continental climate, which means mild summers and cold winters. Summer temperatures rarely exceed 80 degrees Fahrenheit and winter temperatures can dip well below freezing for several days and weeks in a row. Snowfall is common during the winter months. Summer is when most of the rain in the city occurs, usually during the months of June and July.

Naperville is home to the number one library in the country, Naperville Public Library. It has been voted the top library for ten years in a row by Hennen's American Public Library Ratings. There are several structures in downtown Naperville that are national historic places, including the Moser Tower and Millennium Carillon. The carillon was constructed in 2000 and dedicated that year.
