Newport News is a city that is located in the extreme eastern portion of the state of Virginia. It is located on the James River and has several miles of waterfront property in the city limits. The origins of the city's name are unclear, but many people believe that it goes back to the starving time at Jamestown. It is speculated by some that colonists left Jamestown but were met by a ship captained by Christopher Newport who was brining supplies to them. The phrase "Newport News" came to mean good news or good luck.

The area around Newport News was a rural area of plantations and farms until after the US Civil War. At that time the city began to construct railroads and shipyards. That attracted thousands of new residents. The Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Company soon began to grow and eventually became the largest shipyard in the world. Most of President Teddy Roosevelt's Great White Fleet was built in Newport News.

Newport News has a very mild climate. Summer temperatures stay in the 80's Fahrenheit and winter temperatures rarely dip below freezing. Most of the rain comes in the months of July and August. The city and surrounding area are home to several Civil War battlefields. The USS Monitor, one of the first ironclad warships used in the Civil War is on display at the Mariner's Museum, which is a museum dedicated to all things ship related. There are shipping artifacts, displays, and works of art. The Virginia War Museum displays memorabilia from United States military history. Weapons, uniforms, posters, and vehicles from various wars are on display in this musuem. It even includes a small section of the Berlin Wall and a piece of the outer wall from the Dachau Concentration Camp near Munich, Germany.

The area is serviced by Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport. Norfolk International Airport is nearby as well, but Newport News is the primary airport used to fly in and out of the area.
