Oceanside is a city that is located in the extreme southwestern portion of the state of California. It is the third largest city in San Diego County and is part of the Carlsbad-Vista- Oceanside tri-city area. The city is located to the south of Camp Pendleton Marine Corps Base, one of the largest and busiest military bases in the continental United States.

In 1848 the region was conquered by the US and a few years later it was settled by a man named Andrew Jackson Myers. The area didn't really grow much until the early 20th century when it became popular as a vacation spot. Most of the town's economy has been based on beach tourism. The construction of Interstate 5 brought more and more people to the area and made the city quite a bit of money.

Oceanside has a semi-arid climate, which means that summers are warm and winters are mild. Summer temperatures generally stay in the 70’s Fahrenheit and winter temperatures rarely drop below 50. Rainfall is scarce in Oceanside, but most of it comes in the months of January through March.

The Oceanside Pier is the longest wooden pier in the western United States. It was originally constructed in 1888 and has been remodeled several times since then. Consistent with the beach scene of the area, Oceanside is home to the California Surf Museum. Several historical buildings still stand in and around Oceanside. One such structure is the Mission San Luis Rey de Francia, which is one of the oldest Spanish missions in the state.

Annually several festivals and events are held in Oceanside. One such festival is the Day of the Dead, held on November 1st, which offers carnival rides, vendors, and live musical performances. The Southern California Beach Soccer Championships are held each May and attract thousands of visitors to the city.
