Paterson is a city that is located in the northern portion of the state of New Jersey. It is currently the third largest city in the state and serves as the seat of government for Passaic County. It has been called the "Silk City" because of its role in the production of silk in the later 19th century.

Early industries in Paterson owe their success and their power to the Great Falls which were harnessed to produce power in the early days of the town. Several mills were built near the falls and then later came textile factories, and manufacturing factories. Firearms, railroad locomotives, and silk were all made in Paterson. Silk became the most lucrative product to come out of the city though. In 1835 Samuel Colt began making firearms in Paterson before he moved his plant to Hartford, Connecticut.

During the Second World War, Paterson played a key role in the war effort by manufacturing aircraft engines. Today many of the big industries have moved out of Paterson and the city has struggled with high unemployment since then.

One major attraction for visitors to the area is Lambert Castle. The home was built in 1892 for Catholina Lambert, one of the chief owners of the silk mills in Paterson. He wanted the home to be built after the medieval castle style that he remembered from England when he was a boy. After he died the castle was sold to the city and it eventually became a historical museum.

Paterson has a humid continental climate, which means mild summers and cold winters. It's location in the extreme northeast of the United States means that snowfall is common in the winter time. Summer temperatures generally stay at or below the 80's Fahrenheit. Winter temperatures can dip below freezing for days on end. The area's rainfall comes mostly in the months of July through August.
