A Traveler's Guide to Rockford

Rockford is a city that is located in the extreme northern portion of the state of Illinois. It is the county seat of government in Winnebago County and has been called the "Forest City". The city can trace its roots back to 1835 when villages were established on the Rock River in the place where Rockford now sits. The villages were originally fur trading outposts and shipping centers on the river, but eventually they grew to become a center of industry. Once the railroads reached the city it really began to grow. John Erlander built his Rockford Union Furniture Company in Rockford and the city of Rockford rapidly became one of the largest producers of furniture, second only to Grand Rapids, Michigan.

In 1910 one of the most important businesses in the history of Rockford was opened, the oldest Harley Davidson dealership. A few years later the US Army constructed Camp Grant nearby which brought more people and jobs to the city. In the later parts of the 20th century, the economy of Rockford became a well oiled manufacturing machine. Everything from heavy tools, machinery, automobiles, to furniture were manufactured in the city.

A few places to see in Rockford are the Discovery Center Museum, which is an interactive science display for children, and the Anderson Japanese Gardens, which have been voted as the best Japanese gardens in North America. The Burpee Museum of National History houses a full T-Rex skeleton and the Lake-Peterson House is listen on the US National Register of Historic Places.

Rockford has a humid continental climate, which means warm summers, cold winters, and cool seasons in between. Summer temperatures average around 83 degrees Fahrenheit and winter temperatures average around 27 degrees Fahrenheit. Most of the rainfall in the area comes during the months of May through June.
