A Traveler's Guide to Salinas

Salinas is a city that is located in the mid-western region of the state of California. It is the seat of government and the largest city in Monterey County. The city of Salinas was fought over by Mexican, Spanish, and American settlers. In the end John C. Fremont conquered it for the United States and the first US post office was built there in 1850. The town was later incorporated in 1874. The city gets its name from the Spanish word for "salt marsh".

The land around Salinas was originally used to graze cattle, but farmers moved to the area and began to cultivate crops. The arrival of the railroad allowed farmers to export their goods all over the country. The most common crops grown were wheat, barley, potatoes, and mustard seed. The city is still dependent on agriculture today for its main source of revenue. The major crops today include lettuce and a wide variety of fruits and vegetables.

Salinas is quite possibly most well known as the birthplace of Nobel Prize winning author John Steinbeck. Downtown Salinas is home to the National Steinbeck Center and the John Steinbeck Library.
Salinas has a Mediterranean climate, which means mild temperatures year round. The ocean breezes keep the city cool in the summer time and temperatures rarely exceed 80 degrees Fahrenheit. Winter temperatures stay mild and rarely dip below the 40 degree mark. Most of the city's rainfall comes in the months of January and February.

The Boronda Adobe History Center is a historical landmark in the city. It is a restored adobe dwelling that was built in 1844. It contains a museum of local and state historical memorabilia.

Salinas Municipal Airport services the greater Salinas airport and is located to the southeast of the city limits. Only single engine craft and helicopters use it. It is also used as the site for the annual California International Airshow which takes place each summer.
