A Traveler's Guide to Springfield

Springfield is a city that is located in the southern portion of the state of Massachusetts. It is the seat of government for Hampden County, and is also the largest city on the Connecticut River. It is currently the third largest city in Massachusetts and the fourth largest in the New England region. Springfield is most well known for James Naismith, a local resident, who invented the game of basketball.

The city of Springfield was originally a collection of small villages on the Connecticut River. Eventually the town grew and in the 1770's George Washington selected it to be the site of the national armory. The Springfield Armory became one of the largest in the country and the Springfield rifle became a staple of the US military for years. The city was the site of Shay's Rebellion in 1787 when a disgruntled band of farmers tried to seize the armory by force. This event led to the disbanding of the Articles of Confederation and the signing of the Constitution.

Industrialization was key for Springfield, especially with the armory in town. Several other manufacturing companies came to the city to make use of its large workforce and favorable location. The Wason Manufacturing Company was one such company. They built railroad passenger cars. Other companies that came to Springfield over the decades include Rolls-Royce, Indian Motorcycles, and Granville Aircraft.

In town there is a memorial to James Naismith, the inventor of basketball. The memorial consists of nineteen, six foot tall painted basketball shoes.

Springfield has a humid continental climate, which means warm summers, cold winters, and cool seasons in between. Snowfall is common in the winter months, as is rainfall in the summer months.
Some sights to see in Springfield include the Quadrangle, a collection of art and history museums, the Dr. Seuss National Memorial, the Basketball Hall of Fame, St. Michael's Cathedral, and the Connecticut River Walkway. The Bright Nights is an annual Christmas celebration, complete with lights, music, and parades.
