Springfield Quick Facts
A Traveler's Guide to Springfield
Springfield is a city that is located in the southeastern portion of the state of Missouri. It is the third largest city in the state and is the seat of government for Greene County. It has been called the “Queen of the Ozarks†and the “Birthplace of Route 66â€.The state of Missouri was part of the Louisiana Purchase, which the United States made from France in 1803. It became a state in 1821, and Springfield was incorporated as a town in 1838. There are two conflicting stories about the origins of the name. Some say that the name Springfield was chosen because there was a spring located beneath the spot where the city now stands. Others say that the city was named after the city of Springfield, Massachusetts. Those who hold to the latter view claim that James Wilson, a resident of the city, offered free spirits to anyone who would vote to name the city after his hometown in Massachusetts.
Springfield was connected to nearby Fort Smith, Arkansas by the Old Wire Road until the mid 19th century when the Butterfield Overland Stage company began carrying passengers to the city. That road became very important during the Civil War, and after the war it was replaced with railroads.
Springfield was the site of one of the only recorded duel shootouts in American history. There are two brass plaques that mark the spots where Davis Tutt and Wild Bill Hickok stood when they dueled. Hickok won by shooting Tutt through the heart.
Springfield has a humid subtropical climate, which means hot summers, cold winters, and cool seasons in between the two. Summer temperatures generally stay below 90 degrees Fahrenheit and winter temperatures can dip below freezing for days on end. Most of the precipitation in the area comes in the months of May through August.
In 1926 Springfield was selected to hold a convention on the first paved transcontinental highway across the US. It was at this convention that Route 66 was given its name. The city has been called the “Birthplace of Route 66†ever since then.
