A Traveler's Guide to St Petersburg

St. Petersburg, or St. Pete as it's also known, is a city located on the west coast of the state of Florida. It is the fourth largest city in the state of Florida and is the second largest city in the Tampa area. It is located on a peninsula between Tampa Bay and the Gulf of Mexico. St. Pete is a very popular tourist destination for both American and foreign tourists. St. Pete was settled in 1888 when a railroad stop was built there.

The railroad brought business and traffic to the local area and soon the population steadily increased. But it wasn't until the channel to the south of the city was deepened that the city really started to grow. The deepening of the channel allowed larger ships to come into the bay. This lead to an increase in the shipping industry and St. Pete has been an important shipping hub ever since. Ironically enough, the one thing that brought more people to St. Pete than anything else was the invention of air conditioning. People could now feel better about moving to such a hot, humid place.

Because the city is located on a peninsula in the Gulf of Mexico, it has a humid subtropical climate. Summer temperatures generally stay in the 90's Fahrenheit and the winter temperatures rarely get below the 50's Fahrenheit. St. Pete sees a lot of precipitation thought the year, especially in the months of June through September.

The city has quite a few museums and places of interest. The most popular museums are the Museum of Fine Arts, the Salvador Dali Museum, and the Holocaust Museum. The St. Petersburg Pier is one of the most popular attractions during the warm summer months. It contains several shops and restaurants in addition to activities and an aquarium. Bay Walk is a downtown shopping center that contains several theaters, shops, and clubs. Bay Walk is a center for the nightlife of the town. Tampa International Airport is the closest large airport to St. Pete.
