Turin is a city that is located in the northwestern portion of the country of Italy. It is the cultural center of northern Italy and is the capital of the Piedmont region on the Po River. During the Roman times the area around Turin was primarily a Roman army encampment built around a walled fort. After the fall of the Roman Empire the city was annexed as part of the Frankish kingdom. The city grew independent of the Franks but was later conquered by France in the early 18th century. It gained its independence yet again and became part of unified Italy. During World War 2 it was bombed heavily because of the aircraft manufacturing plants that were there. The city was not occupied by Allied forces until the very end of the war. The city rebuilt rapidly and became a very important industrial center in northern Italy. Because it was in much better shape than many of the southern Italian cities, Turin became a popular place for immigrants from southern Italy to travel to in order to find work. The automobile industry became the most important industry in the city.

Turin has a humid subtropical climate, which means hot summers and mild winters. Summer temperatures can reach into the 90's Fahrenheit from time to time but winter temperatures rarely dip below 40. Rainfall occurs year round, but it occurs most heavily during the summer months of June through August.

Soccer is the most popular sport in Turin and in the rest of Italy for that matter. The city is home to two major soccer teams: Juventus F.C. and Torino F.C. Juventus is the larger and more successful of the two and is also the most successful of all Italian football clubs. It has the most international titles of any team in Italy.
