A Traveler's Guide to West Valley City

West Valley City is a city that is located in the northern portion of the US state of Utah.  It is in Salt Lake County and is a suburb of Salt Lake City.  It is the second largest city in Utah behind Salt Lake City.  It is a conglomeration of the towns of Chesterfield, Redwood, Granger, and Hunter.  English is the primary spoken language in West Valley City.

In 1849 Joseph Harker moved to the area and founded a small farming community near Salt Lake.  Water was pumped in and soon the area began to produce large amounts of corn, beans, and fruit.  The area did not become a town until 1876 when more people started moving there.  The city was incorporated soon thereafter and has grown in proportion to the neighboring city of Salt Lake City.  Recently, during the 2002 Winter Olympics, West Valley City is where the women's ice hockey events were held.

West Valley City has a semi-arid climate, which means hot summers and cool winters.  Summer temperatures can be hot at times, even reaching into the 90's Fahrenheit, and winters can be cold, with temperatures occasionally dipping below freezing.  Snowfall occurs from time to time, but rarely, and rainfall occurs most often in the months of January through March.

There are several sporting venues in West Valley City.  It is home to the Utah Grizzlies who compete in the ECHL and the Utah Blaze who compete in the AFL.  Stonebridge Golf Course and Westridge Golf Course are two of the nicest courses in the city.  Rocky Mountain Raceway hosts regular racing events and the Maverik Center is home to several sporting events and performances throughout the year.  The Valley Fair Mall is the largest shopping center in the area.
