Determine whether it is not only your category that is sold out, but that all cars are unavailable.  If more expensive cars are available, ask to be upgraded at the same cost.

If they have multiple locations, ask them to check if any have cars available.

Have them call to see if cars are available at one of their competitors. If the price is higher ask that they pay the difference.

If no cars are available anywhere, ask if they will at least  drive you to your destination.

Don’t give in.  Check to see if any cars will be available for you the next day.

Assuming you acted in good faith and they still don’t have a car available, ask to be compensated.

Check their brochures about their policies. That way you can make your decisions quickly regarding any optional services when you finally reach the counter.

Look at a local map to find out where you’re going.

Have your documentation ready when they call your name.

Consider joining the company’s VIP club to help speed you through the line next time.

Your confirmation number is vital.  They might be unable to find the reservation under your name, but your confirmation number will help you to keep that low rate that was so hard to come by.

Make sure that your driver’s license, any coupons and credit cards are ready.

Any frequent flier or other bonus program numbers that you want to be credited to you.

Proof of insurance.  Many companies ask for it if you decline their collision or damage waivers.  Bring your insurance card just in case..

 Sometimes.  Find out first what they have available for you, then ask about upgrade possibilities.  Often the company may have sold out of certain models but have too many of another type around.  This could mean that the luxury car or specialty vehicle that was so much more could now only be a few dollars difference.
