Where do I return the car ? How long will it take ?

When picking up the car, find out the time needed for returning the car as well as the return location. Get phone numbers in case of an accident or breakdown.

All rental companies provide local maps. Take one even if you don't think you'll need it. Even if you have directions, it can't hurt. Make note of your hotel’s address since there may be several hotels of the same chain in the area.

Will the car be full of gas when I pick it up ?

Most companies provide a full tank at pick up. Check the contract. If you signed it out as full, make sure that it is full.

How can I be sure that the contract is correct ?

You are signing a legal document. Look it over carefully. Many people just sign it and leave, assuming that everything is correct. Check the return time, location, and additional driver clause. Make certain that it matches your booking price. Make sure that you are aware of any optional charges that you have agreed to pay. Verify that any coupons or discounts have been applied. Avoid any problems on return or potential legal problems. What is in writing is what matters, not what you think it should say. If there are questions that the agent can't answer, ask for the manager.

Do I need to keep the paperwork in the rental ?

It's probably a good idea to keep your rental contract in the glove compartment. It may serve as the car’s registration and it will at least prove that you have the legal right to drive the car in case you are stopped. Cross out the credit card numbers on the rental contract if the company’s computer didn't cross them out for you.

What if I have a problem with the car or decide to keep it longer than originally planned ?

When you pick up the car, always ask for phone numbers in case of an accident, breakdown or the necessity of a rental extension. If the local office is closed, get the number of their national reservation center that is probably open 24 hours. If it is a small company, get an emergency, after hours number.
